PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- Legendary vocalist and Broadway actress, Melba Moore, will be coming to Petersburg in January. On Tuesday, Jan. 14, from 6 to 8 p.m., the Petersburg Public Library, located at 201 W. Washington St., is offering the chance to meet Melba Moore for free. The library is a par t of Moore's book tour in Virginia, where she is promoting her memoir, "This Is It - Marvelous... And Getting Better." Her book is about Moore's career, music, theater and culture. Moore made history as the first African American to replace a white actress as the leading role in the musical "Hair." She also became the first African American to win a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for "Purlie." Moore achieved success with her famous songs such as "This Is It," "You Stepped Into My Life," and Grammy-nominated "Read My Lips." She has also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2023, and her cover of "Lift Every Voice and Sing" was inducted into the Library of Congress National Recording Registry.
