Unrestrained driver killed, passenger injured in Madison County crash

ALEXANDRIA, Ind. (WISH) — A 37-year-old driver from Anderson died in a single-car crash Wednesday afternoon on a rural road in northern Madison County, the sheriff’s department said.
Darren Lockhart died in the crash that happened just before 4 p.m. Wednesday in the 2300 block of East Cou
nty Road 800 North, which sits between county roads 200 and 300 East near the city of Alexandria.
Members of a special sheriff’s department team that investigates crashes were not immediately sure why the blue 1999 Mercury Sable carrying Lockhart veered off the road twice, striking a ditch and a guardrail.
Passenger Robert Cantrall, 32, also from Anderson, suffered severe head injuries and was taken to Community Hospital Anderson, where he remained under care Wednesday night.
Both occupants were unrestrained and ejected from the car.
The crash site is about a 10-minute drive southeast of the downtown Alexandria. The city is about a 70-minute drive northeast of downtown Indianapolis.
