Dallas Animal Services needs volunteers to calm shelter dogs during fireworks
Dec 31, 2025
As North Texas prepares to ring in the new year with fireworks, Dallas Animal Services is asking the community to help make the night a little less stressful for shelter pets.
The city-run shelter will host its annual Calming the Canines event tonight from 10:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.
The shelter
is located on 1818 N. Westmoreland Road off of I-30, very close to the large fireworks display in downtown Dallas.
Volunteers are invited to spend time with dogs during the night by reading, singing, talking, or simply sitting quietly to provide comfort.
Fireworks can trigger high levels of anxiety in dogs, especially those in shelter environments. This event creates a peaceful presence for the animals and offers a unique way for the community to connect with them.
Volunteers don’t need to pre-register, just show up by 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday night. Bring a yoga mat, blanket, or folding chair for seating. Treats for the dogs are optional to bring, but encouraged.
A short safety orientation will kick off the evening. The event is open to all ages, but parking is limited, so carpooling or ridesharing is recommended. Donations are welcome, and treats will also be available on-site.
