A man who police identified as a person of interest in the fatal shooting at a Richmond IHOP on Monday shot himself Tuesday in front of police in San Pablo, according to authorities.
The person of interest was still alive after the self-inflicted gunshot and taken to a hospital, where he was list
ed in critical condition. He was identified only as a 44-year-old San Pablo resident.
On Monday, a dishwasher was shot and killed while working in the kitchen of an IHOP restaurant in Richmond, police said. As police identified and searched for a person of interest, the man arrived at the San Pablo Police Department, where police say he then shot himself.
Since the person of interest has not been charged and is still alive, police are not releasing his name. A motive behind the IHOP shooting still had not been determined as of Wednesday morning.
Police say the victim in Monday’s shooting was killed while working in the IHOP kitchen.
“Our investigators worked diligently throughout the night and were able to identify a person of interest in this homicide; that person was a coworker at that business,” Richmond police Lt. Donald Patchin said.
The person of interest is a resident of San Pablo, and detectives on Tuesday secured an arrest warrant for him.
San Pablo police say officers were handling a separate call for service within the parking lot of the police department when a man approached one of the officers.
“There was a language barrier. During this brief interaction, the male subject then walked away from our officer, and then our officer turned his attention back to the original call for service,” said Capt. James Laughter, who added officers then heard a gunshot. “We then located a male subject lying on the ground with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”
