Wendy Davis said every Christmas she travels with her dad to Bloomington, Indiana, to visit family. But this year her dad, Daniel Davis, has been missing for over a month, and she stayed in Chicago to continue searching for him in the south suburbs. Davis, 59, was last seen Nov. 25, leaving 115 Bour bon Street at 3359 W. 115th St. in Merrionette Park, and the search narrowed on Blue Island in early December, according to police. Davis said some of her Bloomington family visited her this year to help with the search and drop off cookies. She said it felt crazy to hang out with them at 115 Bourbon Street, where for 26 years her dad was the head lighting designer for concerts. Davis said she was able to continue holiday celebrations in a different way this year, even continuing a decade-long tradition with her dad’s best friend, where they exchange the “dumbest gifts” they can find. She said these family and friends, along with kind words from people online and in the community, kept her going as the search for her dad continued over the holidays and recently received a strong online following. “Just kind of being there for each other still is what we’re trying to do, even though it’s not the same,” she said. Camera footage showed Davis leaving St. Donatus Church in the 1900 block of South Union Street at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 26. A Chicago Police Department canine picked up his scent from the church and followed it to train tracks near 127th Street and Hoyne Avenue in Blue Island, where the scent stopped, Wendy Davis said. Chicago police said Davis was wearing a limited edition black Harvey-Davidson jacket, a red and black sweatshirt and black pants. Davis may be carrying identification on him, as his wallet was not found in his car, said Kenny Braasch, one of the search group leaders. Camera footage of Daniel Davis the afternoon of Nov. 25 from Ring cameras in Blue Island. He went missing that day, and the footage was given to a volunteer search party by Blue Island residents. (Wendy Davis) Wendy Davis has garnered a social media following in the search for her dad, which initially started as a volunteer search party organized on Facebook and around the Blue Island area. She said her videos asking for help and describing the search have received more than a million views, and said people have reached out to her from other states and even other countries, offering advice and suggesting she put up signs along highways and at rest stops. She said a nonprofit search and rescue team from Fredericktown, Ohio, is bringing its own canine team this weekend to sniff along the river and help with the search. Davis said a woman with the nonprofit The SAR Sheps reached out to her on social media. She said people in Blue Island have also started reaching out consistently, telling her where they checked for him each day and even calling hospitals and homeless shelters. “It’s just great to not even have to tell people to help us, like people are just taking initiative and going out to look, and that’s something we never could have even expected,” Davis said. “My dad would never believe it.” Wendy Davis with her dad, Dan Davis, who has been missing for over a month. Dan, 59, was last seen Nov. 25, leaving 115 Bourbon Street at 3359 W. 115th St. in Merrionette Park, and the search narrowed on Blue Island in early December. (Wendy Davis) She said the online attention has helped gain a lot of eyes on the search and that people send her photos of possible sightings, although police and her search team have not been able to verify a sighting since Nov. 26. Davis said she and her volunteer search party set up an email at [email protected] and are offering a reward for anyone who has a video of Dan since Nov. 26. Most recently, Davis said the search party received body camera footage of two Chicago police officers responding to a multivehicle accident that Davis was involved in the day before he went missing. Police said he may have suffered a head injury in the crash Davis said she and her family have reviewed the footage and analyzed her dad’s behavior to see if there are any indicators he had a medical episode before the crash occurred, because she said his disappearance is unlike him. She said in the footage he is laughing, making jokes and responding quickly, and she can see why officers thought he was OK. But she said from knowing her dad, she and her family noticed his speech was slightly slurred and that he stumbled on the curb. She said in other footage of him after he went missing, he is stumbling in a similar way. She said the Chicago police detectives are still reviewing the footage, as she had just emailed it to them Tuesday. She said detectives are also helping in other ways and contacting police departments between Blue Island and Gary, Indiana. Davis said she has spoken with police in Wisconsin and Iowa. She said the police in Bloomington, Indiana, her dad’s hometown, are on high alert. Davis said people can continue helping by staying engaged and sharing information on social media. She encouraged people who live in Blue Island or the south suburbs to check their cameras, stay alert and even put up flyers. “You don’t even have to share the post, just send it to a friend or just talk about my dad in general,” Davis said. “What we don’t want to happen is this rolls out of the media because there are no updates, and people get bored and forget about my dad and he never gets found.” [email protected] ...read more read less
