An employee was fatally shot inside an IHOP restaurant in Richmond, law enforcement authorities said. Police are investigating the deadly shooting that occurred Monday afternoon, which has left customers and workers shaken. Richmond police said employees heard a loud noise just before 2 p.m. a nd discovered the dishwasher wounded on the ground. Police said the man, who was in his early 30s, died at the scene. “The investigation is still ongoing, but we believe it was targeted (and) wasn’t just a random shooting,” Richmond Vice Mayor Cesar Zepeda said. “The person came in looking for this person and shot this person.” Zepeda said investigators believe the suspect came in through the back door. He said while surveillance cameras inside the restaurant did capture some helpful evidence, the killer appeared to have known how to avoid them. The police chief said he recently deactivated the city’s Flock cameras until safeguards could be put in place to ensure the data is not shared without permission. He acknowledges the cameras may have helped with the shooting investigation. “We have some cameras around this area and unfortunately, they’re turned off right now,” Zepeda said. “But hopefully with this incident here, this very tragic incident, that this is one of the reasons why we turn them back on.” The police chief confirmed Tuesday the city’s Flock cameras will be reactivated soon. The IHOP franchisee issued the following statement: “Following a tragic incident at our Richmond, CA, location that resulted in the passing of a team member, we are currently focused on caring for our restaurant team and supporting the family. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone impacted.” ...read more read less
