One of the San Diego Wave’s founding members is leaving the club. Goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan was one of the original members of Wave FC, but Monday, the club announced it had agreed to terminate her contract, which ran through 2026. “Kailen has been an integral part of this Club since day one,” San Diego Wave FC Sporting Director and General Manager Camille Ashton said in a statement. “After discussions, we mutually agreed that this was the right decision for all parties. We thank her for the contributions to this Club and this city and wish her the best in the next chapter of her career.” Fans were quick to react to the news on social media. “Four seasons just doesn’t feel like enough. Kailen, thank you for everything you gave to this club and to the supporters who love you so deeply,” read a post from the San Diego Sirens Supporters Group. “You showed up every match with heart, grit, and an authenticity that made it impossible not to root for you.” Sheridan was traded to Wave FC in 2021 and was named the National Women’s Soccer League Goalkeeper of the Year in 2022. This year, she reached 600 regular-season career saves in the NWSL—only the second player to hit that milestone. A member of the Canadian Women’s Soccer team, Sheridan has also won big on the global stage. At the Tokyo Olympics, she was part of the gold medal team and she won bronze in Rio. She has also representated Canada at the 2024 Paris Olympics and in two FIFA World Cups. Three months ago, Sheridan and her wife announced the birth of their daughter, who quickly became a team favorite, featured in several NWSL videos.
