A pair of $4,000 mandolins stolen from a New Jersey music store were returned with a note reading “Sorry, I been drunk.”
Lark Street Music owner Bernard “Buzzy” Levine posted security video of a man stuffing a Gibson F-12 and a Weber Yellowstone into his coat, then fleeing the Teaneck shop l
ast week. Days later, Levine wrote that the merchandise had been returned with an apologetic note written in red pen.
“Sorry, I been drunk. Merry Christmas,” the letter said. “You good man.”
Levine told CBS News that in the 30 or so years his shop has been dealing in vintage instruments, he’d only had one stolen prior to Tuesday. He suspects the culprit returned the mandolins because video of him caught in the act went viral on social media, along with a post stating the alleged thief spoke in a Montenegrin accent.
Levin said he gave chase when the alleged thief returned the instruments by dropping them off at the shop’s front door in a pair of shopping bags, but had no luck.
“I ran up to the door and saw him running down the street so summoning all my feet fleetness I took off after him,” he wrote on Facebook. “Not so smart, I lost him, called 911 and they are in pursuit.”
Levin said there was “a little nick or two” on the instruments, but they were otherwise returned in decent shape.
Police in New Jersey reportedly continue searching for the suspect.
Lark Street Music is located about 14 miles northwest of Penn Station.
