The Mentor CityFest is always a highlight on the summer calendar for many residents in the community. The city also takes great pride in the winter celebration and festival it has put on since 2019. Mentor Chill Out returns on Jan. 17 from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Mentor Civic Center Complex. The communit y event offers a full day of icy fun, warm flavors and entertainment for all ages. “Our amazing recreation team has been hosting this event since 2019,” Mentor Communications Officer Ante Logarusic said. “It has become an annual favorite for families in our area. Once we get past the holidays and the harsh reality of winter sets in, folks are looking for things to do.” Those in attendance can enjoy ice sculptures and live ice carving demonstrations, skate on the outdoor ice rink, create winter-themed crafts, sledding — if weather permits — and cheer on participants during the popular Zamboni Pull. Families can also enjoy the video game truck. For those who want to warm up they can do so with hot cider and hot chocolate or sample adult beverages available for purchase for those 21 and over, including whiskey and bourbon tastings and unique signature drinks. Featured specialties include espresso-flavored vodka with hot chocolate, hot cider with cinnamon whiskey and a unique twist on the classic old fashioned — made with a frozen marshmallow instead of an ice cube. Non-alcoholic options will also be available. “Mentor Chill Out offers a little bit of something for everyone,” Logarusic said. “The best part is that there is a full-schedule of activities that runs all day so show up when it suits you and stay as long as you want. You’re sure to find something to do. “We have been going strong – snow or shine –  for seven years and it gets better every single year.” The Chili Cook-Off begins at 2 p.m. Anyone interested in participating should call 440-974-5727 for more information. Food vendors will be on site with items available for purchase throughout the event. As evening approaches, there is a battle between ice and fire as massive ice blocks are filled with wood pallets and set ablaze in a visual display. The event concludes with a fireworks show. “One of the best events of the winter season happens at the Mentor Civic Center Complex on Jan.17,” Mentor City Council President Sean Blake said. “During the depth of winter, when we seem to be always trapped indoors comes the Mentor Chill Out. A perfect reason to bundle up and come out to enjoy ice sculptures, ice carving demonstrations, ice skating and sledding – weather conditions permitting. The Zamboni Pull is a must see. This is a great event.” The Mentor Civic Center Campus is located at 8500 Civic Center Blvd. Learn more at www.mentorchillout.com. ...read more read less
