SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A U-Haul truck was intentionally set on fire during a sideshow event near the intersection of Kirkham and La Playa streets in San Francisco’s Outer Sunset District early Saturday morning, fire investigators suspect. Numerous people called 911 between 3:45 a.m. and 4:45 a. m. about the sideshow and burning box truck in the area. According to 911 calls, more than 100 spectators were at the illegal event. An Outer Sunset resident who asked to remain anonymous told KRON4 News that he was unable to get through to 911. The resident captured video of the sideshow and burning U-Haul, which he said was rented the day before by his neighbor. “During this time, there were no police officers present,” the man said. “I attempted to call 911, but was unable to get through for several minutes. The lack of emergency response was alarming given the size and intensity of the crowd.” 1 dead, 3 injured in shooting at San Jose business Friday morning The San Francisco Police Department responded to the sideshow at 4:24 a.m. Officers arrived at the scene and saw people driving recklessly and setting off fireworks, SFPD told KRON4 News. "A preliminary investigation revealed multiple suspects vandalized a truck and set fire to the vehicle," SFPD said. "The suspects then fled the scene in a vehicle." Officers patrolled the area for more sideshows and found a vehicle on the 1600 block of 45th Avenue, whitch matched the desctiption of a car used in the sideshow. The driver was detained and the vehicle was towed. The case remains under investigation. “This was a terrifying experience for residents in the area, and I believe it raises serious concerns about public safety and emergency response times in the neighborhood,” the resident said. ...read more read less
