PET PALS: Handling grief when losing a beloved pet
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Each and every week, “Pet Pals TV” shares a fun, interesting, and informative story about our-four legged and furry friend population.
On the latest “Pet Pals TV,” Tom Dock of Noah’s Animal Hospital joined N
ews 8’s Pam Elliot to discuss handling pet loss and grief.
Dock owns multiple mastiffs who are all mascots for Indiana’s professional soccer team, Indy Eleven. On Christmas Eve, Orion, who was eight years old, passed away due to a splenic tumor.
Dock reflected on his deep bond with his dogs, stating that losing Orion was particularly difficult. He noted the importance of recognizing behavioral changes in pets, such as not eating. Orion also displayed strange behaviors before his death.
“When he didn’t eat, we knew that was a problem,” Dock said.
Losing a furry family member is hard. Dock acknowledged the varying ways people cope with such losses. He advised those struggling with grief to reach out for help, stating, “If you need help, ask for help.” He pointed to resources from organizations like Rose Pet Memorial, which offers support for those grieving a beloved pet.
Dock also says if you have the slightest concern about your pet, reach out to your vet and don’t believe everything you read online.
“Reach out to your veterinarian office. A lot of times, they can provide resources for you to get through this because they are apart of our family.”
