With the presents unwrapped and the egg-nog jug empty, it’s time to think about taking down the tree. Officials with the city of San Diego say you can do that starting on Dec. 26, and residents have till Jan. 16 to recycle their tree at one of 16 locations. Or, you can take it out to the cur b and put it in your green bin once you’ve chopped it up: “The Organic Waste Curbside Green Bins should be used to recycle Christmas Trees. Customers using the green bin provided by the city should cut their trees to fit into the automated container for pickup on collection day.” Here’s a link to what the city calls “quick, handy tips.” Yes, really. The city plans on chipping the trees and turning them into mulch — bonus: City residents can grab up to two cubic yards of mulch for free at the Miramar Greenery. Did you have a flocked tree this year with the fake snow? Those are fine to recycle at city sites, too, but make sure to check about restrictions at other county localities here before you do. It probably goes without saying, but you have to take off the lights, ornaments, tree stands, tinsel and any other decorations.
