(KRON) -- A man who was allegedly reaching for a high-powered rifle during a traffic stop was shot and killed by Brentwood police on Christmas Eve. According to the Brentwood Police Department, officers pulled a vehicle over in the area of Balfour Road Wednesday night at around 10:55 p.m. for a susp ected DUI. The driver, described as a man in his 40s, was the vehicle's sole occupant. While speaking to the driver, officers developed probable cause to search the vehicle. During the search, Brentwood PD said officers located a high-powered rifle in the vehicle. A dog was abandoned outside Google on Christmas Eve. Then Reddit came to the rescue Officers attempted to arrest the driver and he physically resisted, refused to follow verbal commands, and according to police, grabbed the rifle. This led to a shooting in which one of the officers fired their weapon. The driver was struck and officials said several officers rendered emergency aid until paramedics arrived. The suspect died at the scene. No officers were injured in the shooting. An investigation into the shooting is ongoing, according to Brentwood PD. The Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office is conducting a parallel investigation in accordance with protocols.
