It’s not a white Christmas. But it will be a white weekend — at least around here. An area of low pressure is expected to approach the tri-state area Friday, bringing accumulating snow late Friday afternoon into Saturday morning, which will heavily impact post-Christmas travel. A winter storm warning has been issued for the entire metro area, from southern Connecticut to northeast New Jersey and southeast New York. It lasts from 4 p.m. Friday to 1 p.m. Saturday. Check the latest weather alerts here. At this point, models predict up to 6 inches of snow for New York City, Long Island and central New Jersey and more elsewhere — upwards of 8 inches, potentially, in the Hudson Valley and North Jersey and even higher amounts, possibly up to a foot, in the higher elevations. Because we’ve had so little snow the last few winters, even a 4-inch snow total would be Central Park’s biggest since January 2022 — almost four years — but the potential is there for even more snow if the forecast holds. For New York, Connecticut and most of New Jersey this will be an all-snow event, as temperatures stay below freezing for the duration. Areas farther southwest will see a mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain from the system. Snow could start falling around 6 p.m. Friday, but the chances kick up in earnest overnight. Expect the bulk of it to come between midnight and 6 a.m. Saturday, exacerbating the potential for rough post-Christmas travel. Another system – warmer with all rain – will move through Sunday night. Very thin ice accumulation on roads in the wintry mix zone could cause dangerous travel Friday night into Saturday. A winter storm watch has been issued for the tri-state area. The second system moving through over the weekend, the Sunday evening rain event, will melt some of the snow on the ground and could cause isolated flooding and travel headaches into Monday. After this weekend, very cold air moves in as we close out 2025 and say hello to 2026. Bundle up! ...read more read less
