Sonoma County particularly was hit hard by Tuesday night’s storm, with heavy rain and high winds causing power outages, downing trees, damaging homes and businesses and sending a kid to the hospital. “There was one minor child who was taken into the hospital, just for precautionary reasons, j ust to get everything checked out,” Sonoma County Fire District Capt. Sam Crenshaw said. The small child was sent to the hospital after a giant redwood fell across a home and power lines before crushing three cars. In Guerneville, a cleanup is underway at The Rio Nido Lodge after a giant branch crashed through a guest room roof during the storm. Cody Harris, a visitor from Oklahoma, said that his longtime friend, the lodge’s owner, asked him if he could lend a hand on Christmas Eve. “When I got here there was a tree sticking through the roof and part of it through the hot tub,” Harris said. Rain wasn’t the only issue, as high winds knocked down a powerline on Highway 1 near Bodega Bay, cutting power for many in Guerneville, Forestville and other parts of the county. As another round of rain and wind arrives Wednesday night, Crenshaw said the threat of more problems will grow. “We’re expecting a lot more trees and limbs coming down this evening, as you mentioned with the ground being pre-saturated, that’s a lot for these trees to hold as they’re soaking up more and more water,” he added. “That ground is becoming less stable, and so we’re really hopeful that people can be mindful of that.” ...read more read less
