Stutzman: Redistricting vote could hurt our priorities
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indiana Congressman Marlin Stutzman said rather than renewing Affordable Care Act subsidies, Congress should redirect any subsidies to options such as health savings accounts.
In an interview with News 8 for “All
INdiana Politics,” Stutzman said the federal government’s subsidies under the 2010 law have led to record profits for insurers while driving up premiums. He said a quick fix could be to subsidize health savings accounts and then enact new price transparency laws.
“We need to eliminate overhead costs. We need to let the American consumer make the choice that’s best for their family rather than the insurance companies dictating what they can and can’t do,” he said.
Stutzman said he is still concerned the Indiana Senate’s Dec. 11 vote to reject new Congressional district maps will lead to financial consequences for the state. He said President Donald Trump has not threatened to cut off funding for any programs but presidents of either party historically tend to favor the states that cooperate the most with them.
Stutzman said he’s worried the vote could jeopardize projects he’s been working on such as bringing F-35s to Fort Wayne Air National Guard Base and following through on the USDA’s plans to establish a regional headquarters in Indianapolis.
The National Defense Authorization Act for 2026 includes funding to modernize the Air National Guard facility in Fort Wayne. Stutzman said that will continue to be a top priority for him going into the new year.
Stutzman explained that he wants to continue to push for federal funding to convert U.S. 30 into a limited-access highway, saying those initiatives often involve multiple members of the Indiana delegation even if a project only involves one member’s district.
