LAWRENCE TWP. —  Although the Robbinsville and Hightstown wrestling teams are in different divisions, when they wrestled each other in a quad meet at Notre Dame on Tuesday bragging rights on the higher end of the Colonial Valley Conference pecking order were on the line. On this front it was a so lid showing for Robbinsville at it beat Hightstown, 46-30, en route to a sweep in which it also defeated Notre Dame, 51-25, and Ewing, 69-3. In other results from the quad, Hightstown beat Ewing, 72-12, and Notre Dame, 57-22, and Notre Dame was a 48-36 winner over Ewing, Robbinsville (3-2) had struggled mightily in two earlier duals against rugged non-conference competition, but it quickly became a much different story when it got its afternoon started at 106 pounds against Hightstown. This proved to be one of the key bouts of the match as Pierce Cicero pinned the Rams’ Angelo Randolph in a time of 2:26 after Randolph took the lead with a first-period takedown. When Alex Viscido then pinned with a double arm bar in the second period at 113, just like that Robbinsville had a 12-0 lead. “It was a good win for him (Cicero),” said Robbinsville coach Dan Hughes. “He’s a young kid who hadn’t wrestled before. He got things off to a positive start.” In arguably the highlight bout, Jordan Corzo got Hightstown on the board at 120 when he was awarded a takedown in the final five seconds to top Vincent Grippo, 4-1. Chris Florian followed with a quick pin at 126, but from there Robbinsville took solid control with four straight pins. The falls by Lucas Messinger (132) and Michael Panzer (138) came as no surprise. What was encouraging were the pins by Ethan Neagle at 144 and Colin Yuncza at 150. “I was happy to see Ethan and Colin win,” said Hughes. “If our middleweights hold their own we can be pretty tough.” The match had an 8-6 split with Robbinsville pinning in seven weights. The one time the Ravens didn’t win by fall was at 215, but this was actually another highlight victory as Anthony Inverso majored Iker Reyes, 10-2. “Inverso is a tough kid,” said Hughes. “He just wears you down.” Inverso did lose later in the day when he fell to Notre Dame strongman Ivan Yultukhovsky by the score of 14-2. No disgrace there because a lot of people are going to lose to Notre Dame’s new 215 pounder after he transferred from Lawrence following a 31-win season for the Cardinals. Going 3-0 on the day for Mike Russo’s Hightstown team were Corzo, Florian, Antonio Arroyo (165) and Jacob Kramer at 190. Kramer is looking particularly tough and is off to a 10-0 starter after winning 28 matches a year ago. Florian had a nice win when he went up a weight and pinned Notre Dame’s Jake Mulray in 5:25 at 132 pounds. The defending CVC Colonial Division champion, Hightstown is now 5-2.
