(KRON) -- A routine traffic stop in Santa Rosa earlier this month led to a major drug bust and the seizure of enough fentanyl to kill 50,000 people, police said.
The Santa Rosa Police Department stopped a vehicle for a code violation in the 2500 block of Cleveland Avenue just before 2:30 p.m. on De
c. 6. According to police, the officer noticed the driver reaching toward the back of the front passenger seat as he approached the vehicle. The driver, who appeared “visibly nervous,” was identified as Fabian Chavez-Carranza, 37, of Santa Rosa.

The officer obtained consent to search the vehicle. A Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office K-9 alerted to the presence of narcotics during a free-air sniff, prompting a probable cause search. Officers found about 1 kilogram of fentanyl concealed behind the front passenger seat. Police said that amount is considered roughly 50,000 lethal doses.
Chavez-Carranza was arrested and booked into the Sonoma County Jail on suspicion of possession of a narcotic for sale and transportation of a narcotic for sale. A bail enhancement was set at $100,000.
