PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Brown University is moving quickly to review and improve safety and security safeguards following the tragic December 13 mass shooting that left two students dead and several others injured. Brown President Christina Paxson issued a letter Monday night outlining the un iversity’s plans to bolster security with “an external After-Action Review of the incident and a comprehensive Campus Safety and Security Assessment of the Brown campus.” The plan is comprised of three main areas: A rapid response team focusing on immediate security An external After-Action Review of the shooting An external comprehensive Campus Safety and Security Assessment of the Brown campus The rapid response team will first focus on ensuring the campus remains secure during the winter break leading up to the Spring 2026 semester in January. President Paxson said that an external After-Action Review will be launched evaluating several factors leading up to the shooting. This includes a comprehensive assessment of campus safety, preparedness and emergency management response. The entire Brown campus will also be evaluated: This work will be supported by an on-site physical security assessment of the perimeter of buildings, access points, cameras and technology, and other infrastructure conditions, and will build on work underway to enhance security immediately. The external reviews will be run by a committee of the Corporation of Brown University and key outcomes will be shared with the public. Vice President for Public Safety and Emergency Management Rodney Chatman has also been placed on administrative leave, effective immediately. Former Providence Police Department Chief Hugh T. Clements will assume the role on an interim basis. He will also serve as Chief of Brown Police. The Trump administration will also review the incident and whether Brown violated the Clery Act, which ties security requirements to federal student aid. President Paxson said in closing, in part: The concerns our community has about safety and security are real. And I share them. As we work to heal and recover, our primary focus is to nurture a thriving campus by attending to the psychological and social health of all members of our community while we also demonstrate that Brown is still Brown — a safe, inclusive, caring community of talented students and scholars and dedicated staff.   Categories: News, Providence, Rhode Island ...read more read less
