The Wisconsin DNR said Monday that a wild deer tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in La Crosse County. It was a buck killed by a hunter within 10 miles of both the Monroe and Vernon County borders, according to the DNR. That means the baiting and feeding ban that was already in place in the county in now extended by three years. There was a two-year ban prior to this recent result. The DNR also said that the positive CWD result won’t impact current three-year bans in Monroe and Vernon counties. CWD is a fatal disease of the nervous system found in the state’s wild white-tailed deer population since 2002. Baiting or feeding can encourage deer to gather near one another, where the disease is then spread through contact with saliva, blood, feces or urine. Find more information on CWD on the DNR’s CWD website. ...read more read less
