Latest weather: Flood concerns grow as second round of heavy rain moves toward the Bay Area

(KRON) — The chance of flooding will increase across the Bay Area between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning as an incoming storm is expected to drop another 1 to 3.5 inches of rain across the region. More rain will follow Thursday and Friday, potentially affecting holiday travel.

eather Service has issued a flood watch for the entire Bay Area from Tuesday morning to Friday evening. People are advised to prepare for the rain now.

“Today is a transition day between the first big round of rain yesterday and the next big round of rain coming in tomorrow,” the NWS said. “... If you did not finish your outdoor preparations over the weekend or need to make additional preparations, today is your last chance to do so before two stronger systems arrive Tuesday into Wednesday and Wednesday into Thursday.”

The above-average rainfall could cause flooding in city streets, low-lying areas and along rivers, creeks and streams. Another 2 to 4 inches of rain is forecast to fall rain across the interior Bay Area this week. Another 4 to 6 inches is forecast for the Santa Cruz Mountains and as much as 8 inches of rain is forecast for the Santa Lucia Range.

A high wind watch will be in effect from Tuesday evening to Wednesday morning. Southerly 20 to 30-mph winds and gusts up to 60 mph will be possible across the entire Bay Area. The winds could topple trees and sever power lines, potentially causing more widespread outages.
“Very hazardous, impactful winds Tuesday through early Friday along our entire coastline and higher elevations inland with power outages likely,” the NWS forecast states.
5K customers still without power in San Francisco after major outage
A chance of severe thunderstorms is also in the forecast this week. Thunderstorms are possible between Tuesday and Thursday. The chance for thunderstorms is currently around 15 to 25%. However, the chance for thunderstorms may increase as the storm develops.
Beach conditions are dangerous this week. People are advised to stay away from the ocean. KRON4 will continue to monitor the latest weather as the storms develop across the region.
