So much for the Broncos having a stranglehold on the AFC West and in the race for the AFC’s top playoff seed. The Broncos were manhandled 34-20 by Jacksonville on Sunday at Empower Field at Mile High, ending their 11-game winning streak. Their positioning for the playoffs now could go down to t he final week of the season. The Broncos fell to 12-3. The Jaguars, at 11-4, are still in contention for the AFC’s top playoff seed. The Los Angeles Chargers (11-4) won 34-17 Sunday at Dallas to move within one game in the AFC West. With two games left in the season, if the Chargers stay within a game, they would have a chance to win the AFC West with a win at Denver in the regular-season finale Jan. 3 or 4. The Broncos also had their 12-game home winning streak come to an end. They next play at Kansas City on Christmas night. The Jaguars broke open a 17-17 tie in the third quarter with quarterback Trevor Lawrence scoring on a 1-yard run and Lawrence throwing a 10-yard touchdown pass to running back Travis Etienne for a 10-yard touchdown pass for a 31-17 lead at the end of the quarter. The Jaguars, after a fumble by Broncos quarterback Bo Nix, then got a 26-yard field goal by Cam Little with 13:36 left in the game for a 34-17 lead. Lawrence was coming off a game in which he threw for five touchdown passes and ran for one in a 48-20 win over the New York Jets. He completed 23 of 36 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns. The Broncos’ vaunted defense allowed the Jaguars to mostly move the ball plenty through the air. Jacksonville receiver Park Washington had six catches for 145 yards and a touchdown. Washington opened the scoring on a 12-yard touchdown catch from Lawrence with 7 seconds left in the first quarter. The Broncos took a 10-7 lead on a 15-yard touchdown pass to Courtland Sutton early in the second quarter and a 54-yard field goal by Wil Lutz later in the quarter. That would be their only lead of the game. The Jaguars took a 17-10 halftime lead on a 3-yard touchdown pass from Lawrence to tight end Brenton Strang and a 47-yard field goal by Cam Little on the final play of the half. The Broncos did tie the score 17-17 on a 38-yard touchdown run by RJ Harvey with 13:01 left in the quarter. But then the Jaguars scored 17 straight points. The Broncos cut the deficit to 34-20 with 10:44 left in the game on a 21-yard field goal by Lutz. But Nix threw an interception on fourth-and-3 with Denver at the Jacksonville 41 with 8:12 left in the game, and the Jaguars held on for the win. Nix completed 28 of 47 passes for a career-high 353 yards. Harvey carried seven times for 50 yards. ...read more read less
