CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Chesterfield County is one step closer to welcoming the skating and hockey community to a new ice hockey facility -- Richmond Ice Box -- with construction updates and plans for attracting a professional hockey team. A nearly 90,000-square-foot ice hockey facility, Richmond Ice Box, along Gentio Place, was announced back in July 2024. The owner of the Powhatan Ice Den told 8News that it is looking to expand with the hopes of attracting a professional hockey team. The first building would be 50,000 square feet and include an NHL-sized rink, four locker rooms, a junior-level suite with coaches’ rooms, a concession stand and a pro shop. On Thursday, Dec. 18, the Richmond Ice Box provided an update on the progress of the facility. Last week, they poured the slab that will be around the ring and after the holidays, crews will begin working on all the tubing and the requirements for the ice sheets, according to Ryan Winfree, the new ice hockey facility’s general manager, in a video posted on Facebook. The four locker rooms will include adjoining showers and will include large bathroom spaces and showers for each team to use. Crews said construction on the referee locker rooms are also underway. Slab will also be added to the Zamboni area and 350 spectator seats facing the ice, per Winfree. The facility is coming to Chesterfield in summer 2026. ...read more read less
