Dec 19, 2025
A Long Island family is worried about their 79-year-old wife, mother and grandmother who has dementia and has not been seen since Tuesday afternoon.
Shi Hua Xu lives with her husband and son in a multi-generational home on Oakley Street in Great Neck. In the family’s community, there are many p
eople who can help keep track of her, but on Tuesday around 3 p.m., Xu’s son said she left the house without her cellphone or her new sneakers, which have an Apple Airtag embedded in the soles. Her family has not been able to track her.
“She’s walked off a few times, but we’ve been lucky,” said her son Chibo Qian, “She’s always had a tracking device with her.”
One time she walked off for 12 hours but walked back on her own. When she did not return on Tuesday evening, the family filed a missing persons report.
In the pouring rain at times, the family and community members hit the streets Friday to help search for the woman. Nassau County police launched a helicopter to assist with the search.
Many had already heard about the missing woman through social media but no one had seen her since Wednesday, when there was an unconfirmed sighting of her on Steamboat Road in Kings Point.
Xu stands 5 feet tall, weighs 95 pounds, speaks some English, but mainly Mandarin Chinse, and was last seen wearing a red jacket.
“I think time is not on our side, but we’re not giving up hope on our search and we’re gonna continue until we find her,” said Qian. “She’s resourceful and hopefully she will find shelter.”
The family passed out flyers to delivery men, postal workers and anyone else to keep an eye out for Xu. They also asked homeowners to check their sheds and backyards, for the small chance she may have hid in one for shelter.
