Elizabeth L. Griswold, 79
Dec 19, 2025
Elizabeth “Betsy” L. Griswold, 79, of Fayetteville, passed away peacefully on Nov. 24, 2025.
Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Betsy moved to Fayetteville at a very young age and spent the rest of her life in the Fayetteville and Manlius area. As both a nurse and a mother of two, Betsy dedicated her
life to helping others. She worked in healthcare for over 40 years in hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and as a nursing instructor, teaching the next generation of care providers.
Outside of healthcare, Betsy also brought joy to her community by founding and operating Fantasy Flights Hot Air Ballooning with her husband James “Jim” Griswold, who passed away in 1991. Thanks to the efforts of Betsy and her husband, thousands of people have gotten to see the world from above, and it is a tradition that both her sons continue to carry on.
In her free time, Betsy loved being outdoors in all four of Central New York’s lovely seasons, and she enjoyed downhill skiing, going for walks and taking boat and skiff rides on the St. Lawrence River. Betsy’s life was one filled with humor, adventure, love and perseverance, and she will be dearly missed.
Betsy was preceded in death by her husband, James “Jim” Griswold, and she is survived by her two sons, Peter (of Atlanta, GA) and Scott (of Albany, N.Y.), as well as her four nieces, three nephews and three grandchildren.
The Griswold Family would like to thank Betsy’s friends and family in the hot air ballooning community, her fellow St. Lawrence river rats and especially her neighbors in Fayette Manor who always came to visit her with their dogs!
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations to the American Heart Association be made in Betsy’s name.
