Single live bullet found at West Warwick school, classes canceled for day
Dec 19, 2025
WEST WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) — A single live bullet was discovered in the girls’ locker room at Deering Middle School Friday morning, prompting a police investigation and an early dismissal of classes.
According to West Warwick Public Schools Superintendent Karen A. Tarasevich, the bullet was repo
rted to school administrators and the West Warwick Police Department.
In a letter sent to the school community Tarasevich said that a student brought the bullet into the school.
“Police have confirmed that no weapon or firearm was ever located, that the student did not and does not have access to firearms, and that there was no intent to harm,” the superintendent said. “The student will be facing a criminal charge in Family Court. Our district is working closely with the student and their family regarding appropriate disciplinary steps and any additional support that may be needed.”
Tarasevich’s full letter can be read below:
Dear Parents, Guardians, and Staff:
I am writing to share an update following the conclusion of the West Warwick Police Department’s investigation into today’s discovery at Deering Middle School.
According to law enforcement, two students reported finding a single live bullet in the girls’ locker room, which was immediately brought to the attention of school administrators. The West Warwick Police Department responded promptly, secured the item, and conducted a thorough investigation.
As a result of that investigation, a Deering Middle School student was identified as the individual who brought the bullet into the school. Police have confirmed that no weapon or firearm was ever located, that the student did not and does not have access to firearms, and that there was no intent to harm. The student will be facing a criminal charge in Family Court. Our district is working closely with the student and their family regarding appropriate disciplinary steps and any additional support that may be needed.
I want to reiterate that the decision to dismiss Deering Middle School and West Warwick High School early today was both appropriate and necessary. In the current climate surrounding school safety, we will always err on the side of caution. Our responsibility is to support the safety of our students and entire school community, and we wanted to be sure the police had the proper space and time to fully investigate what was found and confirm that indeed our school buildings are safe.
As part of our standard post-incident procedures, our district leadership will be conducting a debrief with building administration and the West Warwick Police Department to review our coordinated response. This reflective process is an important part of our ongoing commitment to school safety and preparedness, and ensures we continue to respond effectively to any and all safety concerns. I would like to thank the members of the WWPD for their immediate response and investigation into this incident.
And as shared earlier, I understand that events like this can be unsettling and emotionally impactful for members of our school community, particularly in the wake of the mass tragedy in Providence. Professional mental health supports remain available, and we are grateful to our community partners, including Tide Family Services, who have reached out to offer additional support and resources to students who may need them.
Deering Middle School and West Warwick High School will be open as normal on Monday, January 5, 2026 after Christmas vacation. Today’s early dismissal will not impact our current 2025-2026 academic calendar or end-of-school schedule.
We appreciate your understanding and patience as information was gathered and shared responsibly during an active investigation. Thank you for your continued partnership and trust as we work together to support the safety and well-being of our school community.
