INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The two men arrested in a fiery street racing crash that in one fatality never received their driver’s licenses and initially tried to report their damaged car stolen, according to police. News 8 previously reported on the crash Dec. 11. According to the Indianap olis Metropolitan Police Department, Saturnino Garcia Hernandez died shortly after 8 a.m. Dec. 11 after his Chevy Colorado was hit by street racers on the city’s west side. Court documents say coroners determined Garcia’s cause of death as “thermal injuries.” Crash caught on camera During the investigation, detectives obtained video of the accident from witnesses. On camera, Garcia is seen waiting at a green light to turn left onto Vermont Street. The light turns red, and Garcia moves to clear the intersection. As Garcia is turning, two vehicles – a black Chevy Mustang and a white Nissan Altima – are seen driving “at least 70 mph” down South Lynhurst Drive. Officers noted the speed limit in this area is 35 mph. The vehicles run the red light, and the Mustang collides with the passenger side of Garcia’s pickup truck. The pickup truck catches fire, trapping Garcia Hernandez inside. First responders pronounced him dead at the scene. The Mustang, driven by 21-year-old Angel Osuvaldo-Franco, also sustained serious damage. On camera, Osuvaldo is seen exiting the Mustang as the Nissan Altima turns around in a driveway and doubles back. The Altima, driven by 18-year-old Ricardo Martinez-Valades, stops for Osuvaldo, picks him up, and drives from the crash scene. IMPD later said that neither man ever received valid driver’s licenses. Several witnesses corroborated the events seen on camera, one witness using several expletives to describe the intensity of the crash. Osuvaldo asks girlfriend to report Mustang stolen Later, investigators went to a home in the 2300 block of West 66th Street to look for the Altima’s owner. There, they met with a female asking to report her Mustang stolen. IMPD found the white Nissan Altima parked in the driveway, Martinez in the driver’s seat. Officers took Martinez into custody, while other investigators searched the home, finding Osuvaldo inside a locked room that the female initially said was where her baby was sleeping. Police soon learned from the female that she was the owner of the Mustang, but her boyfriend, Osuvaldo, used it. According to court documents, the female claimed when they purchased the Mustang, Osuvaldo paid her to put it in her name. She also added that Osuvaldo called her after the crash, saying someone had hit him but left. The female told officers she told him to stay at the scene, before telling him to come to her house. Osuvaldo asked her to report the Mustang stolen, police say. Other driver claims crash happened on way to work Later, when speaking with detectives, Martinez claimed he and Osuvaldo, his step-brother, were driving to work at the same company when Osuvaldo’s car was hit. After being hit, Osuvaldo jumped into his car and told him to drive to the 66th Street address. Martinez was arrested on preliminary charges of interfering with public safety by assisting a criminal. He faces several additional charges, including reckless homicide, criminal recklessness, and operating a vehicle without receiving a license. Osuvaldo was taken to a hospital for a blood draw, as is standard procedure in Indiana when there is a fatal crash. The test did not find any alcohol in his system. Online jail records show Osuvaldo and Martinez are currently under federal holds. Osuvaldo faces several charges, including: Leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. Criminal recklessness. Operating a motor vehicle without ever receiving a license. Failure to remain at the scene of an accident resulting in death. Reckless homicide. Both men are due in court for initial hearings at 1:30 p.m. Friday. ...read more read less
