A San Diego police officer running after a suspect through Balboa Park exchanged gunfire with the man, striking the suspect at least once Tuesday afternoon, sheriff’s officials said. The shooting occurred around 4 p.m. when officers attempted to speak with a bicyclist near Balboa Drive and Quince Drive, sheriff’s Lt. Juan Marquez said. The man fled from the officers, first on a bicycle before ditching it and continuing the pursuit on foot. The two officers chased after him through the park and onto a nearby hillside, where the man reportedly pulled a gun out and fired one round, Marquez said. An unnamed officer then returned fire multiple times, striking the man, Marquez said. The officers began rendering medical aid until paramedics could arrive. The man was then taken to a hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening, Marquez said. Authorities have not yet released the name of the suspect or the officer who fired. A gun was recovered at the scene, where detectives gathered evidence and spoke with witnesses, investigators said. Marquez said the cause and events leading up to the shooting are under investigation. The shooting is being investigated by the Sheriff’s Office under a countywide agreement that prevents departments from investigating shootings involving their own officers. The FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office will also be monitoring the investigation. ...read more read less
