RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — As temperatures dropped in December, Dominion Energy has introduced a new online savings program aimed at helping customers manage costs during the winter months. The “Energy Savings Program” comes shortly after the company announced rate increases last month, adding ur gency for customers looking to reduce their monthly bills. Dominion Energy officials said the initiative offers multiple ways for customers to earn credits and gain better control over their energy usage. “Electricity is not a want; this is a need. This is something that people need to live an everyday modern life. That's why we want to make sure that people have the tools to make it affordable,” said spokesperson Craig Carper. Dominion Energy’s online savings program includes several options designed to help customers lower energy use and reduce costs. Peak Time Rebates allow customers to earn bill credits by shifting or reducing energy use during periods of high demand. A virtual energy audit provides personalized energy-saving tips along with a free kit of energy-efficient items mailed directly to the home. Customers can also schedule an in-home energy evaluation with an approved contractor to identify upgrades and rebates that may help lower monthly bills. The company also offers tools to help customers track and manage their energy usage. Energy usage alerts notify customers by text or email when consumption spikes, giving them time to adjust before the bill arrives. Budget billing is available for qualifying customers and helps smooth out seasonal bill fluctuations by offering consistent monthly payment based on average usage. Carper emphasized cold and hot seasons typically place the greatest demand on heating and cooling systems, which can significantly impact energy consumption. One common mistake many households make is completely turning off their HVAC systems when leaving home. Energy experts say doing so forces the system to work harder to return home to a comfortable temperature. Instead, customers are encouraged to make small adjustments, such as lowering the thermostat a few degrees while away and raising it again upon returning home. These minor changes throughout the day can result in noticeable savings. Customers are also advised to be mindful of other energy-intensive activities. Tasks like laundry and dishwashing can be scheduled during the warmest part of the day when heating systems are not working as hard. The EnergyShare Bill Payment Assistance program offers up to $600 in heating bill assistance and includes a free home energy assessment. The Income and Age Qualifying Energy Savings Program provides eligible customers with no-cost home improvements such as attic insulation, heat pump tune-ups, and duct sealing. Flexible payment arrangements are also available for customers who need more time to pay their bills. ...read more read less
