The Vallejo City Unified School District announced the closure of three elementary schools following Wednesday’s Board of Education meeting. The district said those schools are Highland, Lincoln and Pennycook Elementary schools, which will be closing by the end of the 2025-26 school year. Th e decision comes as the district faces financial challenges that have intensified due to a decline in enrollment and attendance, officials said. The school district also announced the approval of $32 million in reductions, including $22 million in staffing cuts, that will be implemented at the end of the 2025-26 school year. “No board member takes these decisions lightly. We carefully examined years of data, listened to our community, and weighed our responsibility to maintain stability in this district for the long term. These actions allow us to protect academic programs, keep resources where students need them most, and prevent far more severe consequences in the future. Our priority is, and will always be, the success and well-being of Vallejo students,” said Board President John Fox. The district said it will work closely with families and staff to provide transition support, including information on new school options, assistance navigating the enrollment process, and personalized outreach. ...read more read less
