A middle school student is facing a murder charge after a weekend shooting in North Texas. Police said the 14-year-old led law enforcement on a two-day search before turning himself in to authorities Monday night in Dallas. His name is being withheld because he is a minor. Lavon police said th e teen fatally shot 24-year-old Romeo English. The suspect made his first court appearance on Tuesday in Collin County Juvenile Court. “It was a sad and unfortunate series of events that could have been avoided,” Lavon Police Chief J. Michael Jones said. “I just wish they hadn’t happened.” The shooting happened during a party Saturday night in the 700 block of Wellington Drive. Police said there was an argument between the teen and English, but investigators are still working to determine what led to the violence. “We’ve been in contact with the attorney for the juvenile, and we’re hoping that he will eventually talk and give his side of the story, but as yet, that hasn’t happened,” Jones said. Jones said officers recovered a gun from the scene Saturday night and are tracing it. Other people could face charges, he said. “We are looking at several individuals and their role in it, but not in the murder itself, but in the events that followed the murder,” Jones said. Jones said the Collin County District Attorney’s Office will determine whether the 14-year-old will be tried as an adult or remain in the juvenile system. English was a soon-to-be father. His girlfriend, LaDericka Brownfield, shared photos of the couple as they prepared to welcome a son. She has also launched a GoFundMe to support her family, saying she is carrying both the weight of grief and the hope for their baby’s future. During the search for the suspect, Community ISD increased security and restricted visitor access at three schools, including the one where the teen was enrolled. The district said those measures were lifted on Tuesday. ...read more read less
