Testimony continued Tuesday in San Francisco’s ongoing “Grandpa Vicha” murder trial. Vicha Ratanapakdee, 84, died in 2021 after allegedly being attacked by Antoine Watson, who was 19 at the time. The attack became a flash point in the stop Asian hate movement. The main witness Tuesday wa s the lead investigator in the case: San Francisco police Sgt. Brent Dittmer. He’s a veteran homicide investigator who many became familiar with during the Bob Lee murder trial. Dittmer took over the “Grandpa Vicha” case a few days after the attack that sent Ratananpaktee to the hospital, where he died from his injuries. Dittmer testified mostly about jail call recordings between Watson and his family and friends. In that series of calls over several days Watson first seemed very quiet but then seemed to get more agitated. Jurors listened to the then-teenager at one point shout on the phone, “I’ll show them what it means to be a high-risk inmate.” Dittmer also testified about being aware of the media attention the case was getting when he took over the investigation in 2021. At the time, video of the attack on Ratanapakdee was being aired on the news and circulating online, and there were rising reports of attacks on Asian people, especially elders. “That period five years ago is about the anti-Asian hate under Covid-19, and my father walking during the morning routine with the mask on,” Ratanapakdee’s daughter, Monthanus, said. Before testifying about the jail calls Tuesday, Watson’s public defense team raised an objection and asked for a mini hearing to scrutinize the contents of the calls Dittmer would be reviewing. Following Dittmer’s testimony, Dr. Ellen Moffatt with the medical examiner’s office took the stand. She started her testimony with her examinations of the external injuries Ratanapaktee suffered to his head and his hand. Testimony continues Wednesday. ...read more read less
