(KRON) -- The Santa Rosa Fire Department announced Tuesday that it was awarded a $114,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) for new state-of the art "jaws of life" extrication tools to rescue crash victims trapped inside vehicles. Unusual San Jose crash kills man, driver arres ted "We are incredibly grateful for this grant," SRFD Division Chief of Emergency Medical Services Matthew Gloeckner said in a news release. SRFD said, according to federal data, 42% of victims killed in vehicle collisions were still alive when emergency first responders arrived at the scene — emphasizing how every second and moment of delay are critical. "Post-crash care is vital," SRFD added. "The new 'jaws of life' rescue tools will improve the SRFDs ability to deliver life-saving measures for patients trapped in vehicles."
