Health Spotlight Special | Stay safe and healthy this holiday season with expert advice
Dec 16, 2025
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — WISH-TV is proud to partner with Community Health Network to talk about critical health issues in central Indiana as part of Tuesday night’s “Health Spotlight: A News 8 Town Hall Special.”
The holidays are under way and we want to focus on staying healthy:
talking about slips and falls, heart health, flu season, and where sick and injured people should go.
So let’s start with injuries. Dr. Matt Connelly of Community Health Network works in emergency medicine and he says there are things you can do to prevent common holiday injuries. “With our colder temperatures coming out, we’re seeing a lot more icy conditions here. Really, our biggest thing is prevention.”
But, it’s not just slips and falls that put people in the hospital. Flu season is underway, and it’s just in time for your family get-togethers. Connelly has what to watch for, in the video.
Also in the Health Spotlight Special, Dr. Mark Hood, an orthopedic surgeon at Community Health Network, talks about something that happens quite often in the winter months: slips and falls. He discussed when to seek medical attention, the most common injuries from falls, the best home treatment for falls, and preventing falls.
Another winter concern is heart health. The American Heart Association says more people die from heart attacks during December and January than any other months of the year. Learn more in the video from Dr. Karamchand Paul, a cardiologist with Community Health Network.
The Health Spotlight Special wrapped up with a visit from Dr. Michelle McCarthy, medical director for Community-GoHealth Urgent Care Centers. McCarthy discussed when patients should go to an urgent care versus a doctor versus the emergency room for illnesses and severe sprains, especially during the holidays.
