Provo Canyon to close overnight for blasting and excavation work
Dec 16, 2025
The Utah Department of Transportation is urging drivers to expect major travel delays on U.S. 189 in Provo Canyon on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, including an overnight closure Saturday night into Sunday morning as crews continue work on the U.S. 189 widening project.
On Thursday, crews will t
emporarily close U.S. 189 between Main Canyon Road in Wallsburg and the intersection of S.R. 113 in Charleston from 10-10:50 a.m. for controlled blasting. Crews will be clearing a path over the hillside for new northbound lanes. Additional blasting is planned in January.
Crews will then begin lane closures in the same area at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, leading to a full closure of U.S. 189 from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Sunday for excavation work. After the overnight closure, traffic will shift into one-way alternating traffic with flaggers until 9 a.m.
Because of the overnight closure and the extended period of one-way alternating traffic, UDOT recommends drivers change the timing of their trip or use alternate routes on Thursday evening of Dec. 20 and the Sunday morning.
Carving space for these new lanes along the mountainside is a major milestone for the U.S. 189 Improved project, UDOT said, which comprises widening the highway to improve access and safety for people traveling to and around Deer Creek Reservoir. Once the new northbound lanes are complete, crews will shift traffic onto the new road and begin work on the southbound lanes in the summer of 2026.
Drivers should also be aware of the following scheduled work in other parts of the state this week:
Northbound Legacy Parkway, Farmington: The ramp from northbound Legacy Parkway to northbound Interstate 15 (Exit 13) will be closed on Thursday from 7 p.m. until Friday at 5 a.m. Drivers should use the Park Lane exit (Exit 12) to get onto northbound I-15 while crews work on a pedestrian bridge.
Northbound I-15, Farmington: Northbound I-15 between U.S. Route 89 (Exit 324) and Park Lane (Exit 325) will be closed on Friday from 9:30 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Saturday for pedestrian bridge work. All traffic will detour to U.S. 89, exit at Main Street (Exit 397) then turn left at 200 North to get back onto northbound I-15.
Eastbound Interstate 84, Weber Canyon: Expect delays Sunday from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday, Dec. 22, as eastbound Interstate 84 near the rest area will be reduced to one lane for bridge work.
All work is weather-dependent, and schedules may change. For the latest traffic information, visit udottraffic.utah.gov.
