OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) -- The suspect in the fatal shooting of legendary Laney College football coach John Beam is expected to appear in court Tuesday. Cedric Irving Jr. is charged with Beam’s murder.
Beam died after being shot in the head while on the Laney College campus in Oakland on November
13. The shooting sent shockwaves throughout the community, where Beam was known as a father figure who forged deep relationships with his players.
Irving first appeared in court on November 18. On that date, a judge granted the defense’s request to continue the case. On Tuesday, Irving is expected to enter a plea.

The Oakland Police Department said the two men knew each other and Irving admitted to shooting the 66-year-old coach. Prosecutors have not provided a motive for the shooting and said Irving has no criminal record.
“There’s no question that if he in fact made those statements, they will come into play,” Michael Cardoza, a legal analyst, told KRON4 on the alleged admission. “That’s why mental health experts are going to have to examine him to see if he’s capable of understanding what’s going on and then secondly to see what his mental capacity was at the time of the homicide.”
If convicted of murder and several enhancements, Irving could face 50 years to life in prison, Alameda County District Attorney Ursula Jones Dickson said at a news conference in November.
Irving is due in court at 9 a.m.
