Partially decomposed body discovered in West Philly home, police say
Dec 16, 2025
A man checking on a friend made a grim discovery early Tuesday, police said, when he found a partially decomposed body in a West Philly home.
According to Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small, officers responded to a home along the unit block of North 61st Street at about 1:30 a.m.
on Tuesday after a 9-1-1 caller reported that they had found a body in a home there.
Inside the property, Small said first responders found a body, laying face down, that had appeared to have been there for some time as it was partially decomposed.
The individual, Small said, was pronounced at the scene at about 1:46 a.m.
The police inspector said the 9-1-1 caller told officers he went to the home to check on a friend that he hadn’t seen in about five weeks when he discovered the body.
Also, Small said, the individual found in the home appeared to have been dead for several weeks.
The friend, Small said, believed the remains belong to a 41-year-old man who lived alone at that home.
However, because of the positioning and the condition of the remains, Small said, police have not yet identified the remains.
“We are not certain who it is because the body is partially decomposed,” said Small.
He also said that, because of the condition of the body, investigators were unable to immediately determine if the deceased had been a victim of foul play.
Though, according to Small, the home was found “in disarray” and was full of debris and clutter.
The medical examiners office, Small said, will conduct an autopsy to help determine the individual’s identity and cause of death.
The man who called 9-1-1 was taken to in for an interview and has been cooperating with police, according to Small.
An investigation, he said, is ongoing.
This is a breaking news story. It will be updated as new information becomes available.
