15 people injured after SF cable car came to an abrupt stop: SFFD

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – The San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD) reported that 15 people were injured after a cable car came to an abrupt stop around 3:09 p.m. at 1351 California St. between Leavenworth and Hyde Streets.

Ambulances arrived to treat minor to moderate injuries, according to SFFD. A total of 15 patients were evaluated. Two were transported immediately to the hospital with minor visual trauma, 10 were complaining of bumps and bruises and three individuals declined transport.
The San Francisco Department of Emergency Management reported that emergency crews are at the scene. Commuters should expect delays and allow for additional travel time.
Due to the delay, cable car customers will need to use the 1 California route, SFMTA advised.
Bus shuttles, once in place, will provide California Cable Car service with a reroute around Hyde Street, SFMTA said.
At 5:29 p.m., SFMTA said on social media that outbound California line bus shuttles will reroute to Sacramento Street between Hyde Street and Van Ness Avenue. Inbound bus shuttles will reroute to Bush Street between Hyde and Leavenworth Streets.
SFMTA issued another update at 6:49 p.m., confirming that bus shuttles will provide California line service for the remainder of the night.
At 8:47 p.m., SFMTA issued a final update on social media, writing that the Powell Cable Car line is back up and running. Mason and Hyde Streets cable cars are resuming regular service.
There will be an ongoing investigation of the incident, according to SFFD.
