A trial date was set on Monday for the man accused of a shooting at a Colorado Springs shopping center that left one person dead. Emmanuel Cooley, 50, was arrested on suspicion of fatally shooting Bryan Parada, 38, in the parking lot of the Park Hill Shopping Center on East Pikes Peak Avenue on M ay 16. Cooley’s arrest affidavit indicated that the two men had been part of a small group hanging out near Pocket Billiards and listening to music when Parada and Cooley began arguing. Surveillance video from nearby businesses showed the pair’s verbal argument escalated when Cooley allegedly took a swing at Parada before pulling out a handgun. Evidence introduced during the August preliminary hearing indicated Cooley was standing up for his brother when he fired the shots. Cooley faces one count of murder in the first degree, one count of felony menacing and another charge involving illegal weapon possession. Court documents show this case isn’t the first time that Cooley has faced murder charges. Cooley pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in a 1999 case and was prohibited from possessing a firearm. During Monday’s hearing, the defense counsel stated that they would formally enter not guilty pleas, as no resolution or plea agreement had been reached prior. Cooley’s trial, set to last around two weeks, will begin May 12. Cooley remains in El Paso County jail on a no-bond hold, inmate records show. He appeared in custody for Monday’s hearing. Family and friends of the victim in the case filled up a few benches in the gallery. Cooley’s next appearance in a 4th Judicial District courtroom is scheduled for April 1 to address motions ahead of trial. ...read more read less
