Carlton had a Billboard hit with “I Can Feel It” in 1971. Prior to that he released singles including “Competition Ain’t Nothin'” and “Drop By My Place,” according to the Detroit Free Press.
He was born Carlton Hudgens before adopting the stage name “Little Carl” Carlton, which he later changed again after relocating to Houston and signed with the Texas record label Back Beat Records.
Carlton appeared on dance programs along with “American Bandstand” and “Soul Train” following the 1981 success of “Bad Mama Jama.” That song has since been sampled by artists including Foxy Brown and Das EFX.
Billboard remembered Carlton for “charting timeless hits that shaped funk, soul and later generations of hip-hop through sampling.”
His last recording appeared to be the 2010 gospel tune “God Is Good.” Michigan Live reported that song was nominated for a 2011 Detroit Music Award.
