A 20-year-old transient man accused of attacking a tanning salon employee and a customer last Tuesday in Loveland struck the employee more than 15 times on the top of her head with a hammer, according to an arrest affidavit. According to the affidavit, the 21-year-old employee was immediately attack ed with a hammer on the top of her head and on her left arm when Kyle Behrens entered Endless Summer Tanning Salon, at 1518 N. Madison Ave., at 6:42 p.m. Tuesday. Employee, customer attacked with hammer at Endless Summer Tanning in Loveland The employee told officers she tried to flee but the assault continued in to the hallway and several open individual tanning rooms. She added that Behrens dragged her into one of the rooms and continued striking her with the hammer until she went limp, the affidavit states. Video surveillance captured by the business’s security cameras showed that Behrens struck the woman more than 10 times. The employee told officers she acted as if she was going to pass out and then Behrens stopped striking her and left the room. Video surveillance showed Behrens using a belt to secure the front entrance to the salon after dragging her into the room. While Behrens was barricading the entrance, the employee was able to go into a different room, finding a 42-year-old customer. The customer told officers that she was in a tanning room, attempting to get into the bed to start her session when she heard the attack and called the police. Together, the women barricaded the door to the tanning room, according to the affidavit. The customer told officers she could hear Behrens pounding on the doors of each room, trying to find out if others were in the salon. Surveillance footage showed that Behrens returned three times to the locked room where the women were. She said he pulled out a knife, which the affidavit said had a fixed blade, and started swiping at her and the customer. The customer told officers she grabbed the knife and hammer from Behrens and that the employee stabbed him in the arm to stop the attack, according to the affidavit. When the customer grabbed the knife, Behrens punched her in the face. She also received superficial injuries to her hands from when Behrens was swiping the knife, the affidavit stated. The employee told officers she had never met or seen Behrens before. A Medical Center of the Rockies physician told officers that the employee had serious bodily injury as a result of the reported attack, adding that she was subjected to a substantial risk of death, permanent disfigurement and a substantial risk of loss or impairment to the function of parts of her body or organs, according to the affidavit. Both the employee and the customer have since been released from the hospital. Loveland Police Department officers responded to the scene within three minutes and contacted Behrens at gunpoint before taking him into custody, the affidavit stated.
