Thomas Carey, a longtime resident of Shelburne, Vt., passed away peacefully on December 2, 2025, at the age of 91, after a period of declining health. Tom was a devoted family man and dedicated husband. His quiet demeanor and dignity will be missed.
Tom was born
on February 1, 1934, in Albany, N.Y., to Thomas and Violet Carey. He grew up in the surrounding area and graduated from Catholic Central High School in Troy, N.Y. Tom served stateside in the navy during the Korean War and then graduated from technical college. He married his high school sweetheart, Theresa Meliti, on October 13, 1956, and they began a journey of love and joy with each other and soon, their family.
Tom joined IBM; he told the story that he attended a job fair to become a TV repairman, but this small company called International Business Machines offered him a little more money and a better career path. Tom made the right choice and had a long, successful career with IBM.
Their son Kevin was born in 1959, their daughter Christine in 1962 and their son John arrived in 1968, in the middle of hurricane Claire. Tom worked on the early manned Mercury space flights of John Glenn and Alan Shepard and returned to Florida later to work on the early Apollo launches. After bringing the family to Vermont in 1968, we never really believed that he didn’t know that the home he bought in Shelburne in the dead of winter was next to Kwiniaska golf course. Next to his wife, family and God, Golf was right up there in the pecking order! Tom loved playing in league nights with his IBM pals and joined golf couples’ leagues with Theresa. These were many of their life long closest friends.
Tom won the “prestigious” Caldwell Cup at Kwiniaska in 1976, a feat the family would repeat back to him in good fun from time to time over the years.
Tom volunteered to coach Little League and became a deacon at St. Catherine’s, where he taught catechism classes. Theresa worked for years at Shelburne Middle School, and together they spent countless hours attending school and sports activities and supporting their children. Together they built a home full of love and encouragement.
Tom is survived by his son Dr. Kevin Carey and his wife, Kathleen, and their children, Allison Macy and her husband, Sam, and Tom’s great-grandson, Henry, Dr. Grace Carey and his namesake, Thomas Carey; son John and his wife, Suzanna, and their sons, Emmett, Michael and Daniel. He is predeceased by his loving wife of over 67 years, Theresa, and their daughter, Christine.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Mansfield Place in Essex Junction and Bayada Hospice for their professional and compassionate attention.
A service and reception will be announced for a future date.
