STATEHOUSE, (WOWO) — State Sen. Andy Zay (R-Huntington) announced Monday he will resign from the Indiana Senate following his appointment as chair of the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC). In a statement released Dec. 15, Zay said his last day serving in the Senate will be Jan. 8, 2026, as required by the new role. Zay has represented Senate District 17 for nearly a decade. “Serving in the Indiana Senate for nearly 10 years has been a tremendous honor,” Zay said, thanking constituents and colleagues for their support during his time in office. Zay said his transition to the IURC will allow him to continue serving Hoosiers statewide while focusing on issues critical to Indiana’s future. The commission regulates public utilities, including electricity, natural gas, water and wastewater services. “Representing Senate District 17 has been a privilege, and serving as a voice for the families, businesses and communities in northeast Indiana has been among the most meaningful aspects of my time in the General Assembly,” he said. Zay also highlighted his appreciation for legislative staff, state agencies and community leaders, saying he is proud of the work accomplished during his tenure. While his role in public service is changing, Zay said his commitment to Hoosiers remains the same as he prepares to begin his new position and work with fellow commissioners and stakeholders to ensure Indiana’s utility system continues to meet the needs of residents and businesses across the state.
