MANLIUS – In recent years the Baldwinsville girls basketball team would highlight its early-season slate by making a trip to Florida to face competition from across the country. Again the Bees will make its way south late this week, bound for the Orlando Convention Center where starting on Thursda y it will play three games hoping to reinforce what it had shown here in Central New York. In its only action last week B’ville took its 3-0 record to Fayetteville-Manlius for the SCAC Metro division opener and made it four wins in a row, defeating the Hornets 58-45. F-M did find some early success against the Bees’ defense, but it was matched and topped as B’ville gained a 21-15 advantage by the end of the first quarter. Then the defenses settled in, making baskets more difficult. The Bees preserved its lead and then got away in the final minutes. More than its previous three games B’ville’s offense spread out its production. Sicily Shaffer led with 16 points, with Aaliyah Zachery close behind earning 13 points. Beverly Marinelli finished with 10 points, just ahead of the nine points from Natalie Hollingshead and the eight points from Olivia Davis. One more game, against West Genesee on Monday night, precedes the Bees’ trip to Florida. ...read more read less
