Bay Area officials increase security at Jewish events after Australia shooting

Officials in the Bay Area announced there will be increased security at Jewish events following the deadly Australia shooting on Sunday.
The Associated Press reported hundreds of people had gathered at Bondi Beach in Sydney to celebrate the first day of Hanukkah when gunmen opened fired. Accordi
ng to officials, at least 15 people were killed, including a 12-year-old child.
Authorities confirmed 29 people were wounded, including two police officers.
AP reports Sunday’s shooting is the deadliest shooting in almost three decades in Australia, a country with strict control laws. They add the massacre follows a wave of antisemitic attacks that have roiled the country over the part year, although authorities did not suggest those and the shooting were connected.
San Francisco police announced they will be increasing patrols at places of worship and Jewish events following the Bondi Beach shooting in Australia during a Hanukkah celebration.
“The SFPD is closely monitoring the horrific attack that occurred on Bondi Beach in Australia. Hatred and antisemitism can never be tolerated, and our prayers go out to the innocent victims. The SFPD has increased patrols at places of worship and Jewish events throughout the city. Our officers remain vigilant and are prepared to respond to any emergency. We are working with our local, state and federal law enforcement partners to assess and handle any potential threats. We are also working with our communities to address concerns to their safety. At this time we have no information of any credible threat. We ask that if you see something, say something and call 911 for any emergency,” police wrote in the statement.
In Walnut Creek, there was increased presence to make sure attendees felt comfortable during the Grand Menorah Lighting at Broadway Plaza. In San Jose, Rabbi Mendel Weinfeld says a planned Menorah Lighting and public Hanukkah celebration at Santana Row will go as planned.
There is also going to be strong security in the event.
