(KRON) -- Law enforcement agencies around the Bay Area are ramping up patrols Sunday in response to a mass shooting at a Hanukkah celebration in Sydney, Australia. The San Francisco Police Department announced that it is increasing patrols at places of worship and Jewish community events around the city as people celebrate the first night of Hanukkah. BLM, LGBTQ+ signs vandalized at Saratoga church "Hatred and antisemitism can never be tolerated, and our prayers go out to the innocent victims," SFPD said in a statement on social media. San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie spoke about the attack. "I am heartbroken by the devastating attack in Sydney. Hate and antisemitism have no place in our world or in San Francisco," Lurie said. "The San Francisco Police Department and our public safety partners are prepared and will be in close coordination to ensure everyone can observe the holiday safely and peacefully." Antisemitism has no place in our world." San Jose police are also on alert following Sunday's attack. "The San Jose Police Department is deeply saddened by the recent terrorist attack in Australia and condemns this act of violence and hatred," SJPD said in statement. "Our hearts are with the victims, their families, and all those affected." SJPD added there is no information about a "specific credible threat" and that authorities will "continue to take all appropriate measures" to protect residents and places of worship. The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office addressed the attack in a statement. "As Hanukkah celebrations begin this evening, we want to reassure our community that your safety, and the safety of all places of worship, continues to be our top priority." Sheriff's deputies will be increasing patrols at places of worship "out of an abundance of caution," SMCSO said. Walnut Creek Mayor Kevin Wilk said that police will be in attendance at the city's Hanukkah celebration tonight. "My heart goes out to the people in Australia, and no place is immune to the rise in antisemitism and hate," Mayor Wilk said in a statement. "We need to all stand up against hate and not normalize it. Nor can we be cowed by it and allow it to prevent our own celebrations." Mayor Wilk said that Walnut Creek will have a "police presence" during Sunday night's celebration for the first night of Hanukkah. Wilk added that it is "an unfortunate reality in today's world." Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee issued a statement about the attack. "As Oakland's Jewish community continues Hanukkah celebrations this week, know that this city stands with you," Mayor Lee Said. "Today we mourn with Sydney, and we reaffirm that antisemitic has no place anywhere in the world." At least 16 people are dead, including a child, after two gunmen opened fire at the holiday celebration at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, Australian authorities said, declaring it a terrorist attack. One gunman was fatally shot by police and the second was arrested.
