Mayor Brett Smiley said that two people were dead and eight were in critical condition, but that those numbers cou ld change. All of them, including the deceased, were students at Brown University. An additional victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries as they ran from the scene. The incident originated near Thayer Street at the university’s Barus Holley engineering building on Hope Street. Much of the East Side remains on lockdown. Brown’s Emergency Information alerts that said that a report of shots fired on Governor Street was unfounded, but asked residents to remain sheltered. The statement also said that multiple exams had been occurring at the the building where the initial shooting took place. “This remains an active crime scene, and law enforcement continues to search for the suspect,” Brown said. “The situation is ongoing, and all members of the community should continue to shelter in place.” In a social media post at 5:45 p.m. President Donald Trump said that the FBI was on scene and the shooter had been taken into custody, although the account later reversed the statement. pic.twitter.com/JYA4PvJ45E — The White House (@WhiteHouse) December 13, 2025 Providence police said that the public should avoid the area of Hope Street near the university. There is currently heavy Providence Police and Fire presence on Hope Street near Brown University.
