Mayor Brett Smiley said that two people were dead and eight were in critical condition, but that those numbers cou ld change. All of them, including the deceased, were students at Brown University. An additional victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries as they ran from the scene. The incident originated near Thayer Street at the university’s Barus Holley engineering building on Hope Street. Much of the East Side remains on lockdown. Brown’s Emergency Information alerts that said that a report of shots fired on Governor Street was unfounded, but asked residents to remain sheltered.
