PHILADELPHIA — The two-win Las Vegas Raiders enter a frigid Lincoln Financial Field Sunday without a starting quarterback, skilled wide receivers or defensive backs, a decent offensive line or a prayer. Well, not so fast. The Eagles (8-5) have lost three in a row and their offense has been anythin g but reliable. The Birds are a heavy favorite and hope to get right against the Raiders (2-11), but nothing is guaranteed. Las Vegas still has dynamic edge rusher Maxx Crosby, who will be a handful for Eagles backup right tackle Fred Johnson, who is playing in place of the injured All-Pro Lane Johnson. Fred dealt with an ankle injury last week but appears to be a full go. Matt Pryor may see some snaps there as well. The Raiders also have rookie running back Ashton Jeanty, whose production behind a weak line hasn’t come close to what it was at Boise State, but he is still dangerous. So is Pro Bowl tight end Brock Bowers. Between Bowers and Jeanty, the Eagles’ linebackers and nickel Cooper DeJean will be busy. At quarterback for the Raiders will be former Eagles backup Kenny Pickett. He’s replacing the injured Geno Smith, who wasn’t having a great year himself. “Obviously, we have respect for Kenny,” said Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, whose corps had a season-high seven sacks last week in a punishing effort. “(He) started a couple years in Pittsburgh and did well when he had to play for us last year. Obviously, saw him on the practice field all last year. I don’t think there’s a (big) advantage just because he was here, that we know him. He’s in a different offense running a different scheme. I think all of that’s way blown out of proportion.” Head coach Pete Carroll fired offensive coordinator Chip Kelly (not a fan favorite in Philadelphia) and special teams coordinator Tom McMahon last month. Las Vegas ranks 31st in total offense (257.2 yards per game), dead last in rushing (72.7 ypg) and 26th in passing (184.5 ypg). In other words, the Raiders are a mess and need to build a roster. But the Eagles’ offense has had its own issues all season — despite a stacked roster. Quarterback Jalen Hurts is coming off a four-interception performance against the Chargers in which he failed to see open receivers (some of whom dropped the ball when he did deliver it their way). “It’s the same Jalen, you don’t beat yourself up over things like that,” wideout DeVonta Smith said. “In this game, stuff like that happens. Everybody’s gonna have a game where they’re down.” The Raiders’ defense is respectable, ranking in the middle of the pack in most categories, though third downs have been an issue. Obviously, Crosby is the focal point. “You’ve got to know where he is at all times,” Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said. “He is a phenomenal football player, so we’ve thought about him quite a bit this week, and that’s our job as coaches and as players to make sure that guys like that, we think about and we have a plan for. Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter will miss today’s game as he recovers from shoulder surgery. (AP Photo/Matt Patterson) “His motor is always running. He is relentless to the football, never stopping. I always say to our team, there’s something dangerous about a team that doesn’t stop coming after you. I feel like that’s how he is and that’s how good D-ends are. He can rush a passer, he can stop the run. He’s physical, he’s fast, he’s quick, he’s athletic. He’s an outstanding football player.” The temperature isn’t expected to rise above freezing, with wind chills in the teens.
