Dangerous cold settles in after a wintry weather system makes its way through
Dec 13, 2025
Lingering Snow and Slick Roads This Morning
We are still dealing with a few lingering snow showers and pockets of a wintry mix early this morning, but the bulk of the precipitation is beginning to wind down and move out of the area. Overnight, many locations picked up anywhere from a light coatin
g to around an inch of snow, and before that snow began, some sleet fell as well. That has left behind a thin glaze of ice in spots, especially on untreated roads, bridges, and elevated surfaces.
If you do not have to be out on the roads this morning, it is best to avoid travel. Snow- and ice-covered roads could lead to slick spots and slowdowns for the morning commute as crews continue to work on road conditions.
Arctic Air Rushes In Behind the Snow
Once the snow moved through, a powerful Arctic cold front quickly followed. Temperatures dropped rapidly overnight, falling into the teens in many locations just after midnight. By the time we wake up Sunday morning, nearly everyone will be dealing with single-digit temperatures.
The cold will be made even more dangerous by gusty northwest winds. Wind chills early Sunday could dip as low as 10 to 15 degrees below zero in some areas, making it feel brutally cold if you’re outdoors for any length of time. Even during the afternoon hours, “feels like” temperatures may struggle to climb out of the single digits as actual highs only reach the teens.
Bitter Cold Continues Through Sunday Night
The Arctic air mass will remain firmly in place through Sunday night. As winds gradually relax overnight, temperatures will drop even further. Many locations will once again fall into the single digits, and a few northern spots could dip to or just below zero.
Even though wind chills will not be as extreme Sunday night as they were earlier in the day, the cold itself will still be impactful. This prolonged stretch of frigid temperatures is the reason a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect through Monday morning.
Slow Improvement Begins on Monday
By Monday, high pressure will settle overhead, allowing skies to turn sunnier and winds to become lighter. While it will still be cold to start the day, temperatures will slowly recover through the afternoon.
Highs on Monday will climb into the mid to upper 30s in many locations, especially south of I-64, though some northern areas may struggle to get above freezing. This will mark the beginning of a gradual warming trend that continues into the middle of the week.
Looking Ahead to the Rest of the Week
As we move deeper into the week, temperatures will continue to moderate, eventually climbing back to near or even above normal by Thursday. A cold front later in the week will bring widespread rain and breezy conditions, followed by another brief cool-down before warmer air returns again heading toward next weekend.
