South Bay gun safety event nets almost 140 firearms

A total of 138 unwanted firearms were turned in by the public during Saturday’s gun safety event in Chula Vista, according to authorities.
Those taking advantage of the event Saturday received a $100 gift card for handguns, rifles and shotguns or a $200 gift card for assault weapons at the Sout
h Bay Superior Courthouse parking lot, San Diego County sheriff’s officials said.
Free firearm lock boxes and trigger locks were also given out to anyone who wanted one.
The sheriff’s Rancho San Diego station and Imperial Beach substation were joined by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, Chula Vista Police Department, National City Police Department, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Division of Adult Parole Operations and San Diegans for Gun Prevention Violence in hosting the gun buy-back program.
All weapons collected will be processed, and any firearms found to have been involved in a crime will be referred to the appropriate law enforcement agency, authorities said. If any guns are found to be stolen, the original owners will be contacted. All remaining weapons will be destroyed in accordance with the law, according to deputies.
